Revolutionizing Pathology with Clinisys™ Orchard®
P&C Labs transforms digital pathology workflows with scalable, centralized enterprise lab solutions
P&C Labs, a long-standing leader in pathology services, has undergone a remarkable transformation by integrating the Clinisys™ Orchard® laboratory information system (LIS) with the Proscia digital pathology solution — integrating them at the same time to take advantage of full system integration from the ground up. Faced with rapid growth, evolving technology, and the need for more efficient workflows, the lab’s leadership recognized that true progress required not just new software, but a fundamental shift in mindset and operations. Through strategic change management and a commitment to quality, P&C Labs leveraged Clinisys’s flexible, automated solutions, fully integrated to a world-class digital system, to revolutionize their processes, empower remote work, and deliver fast, accurate results for clients nationwide.

Background and vision
P&C Labs, with roots dating back to the 1960s, has grown from a single hospital-based pathology practice into a multi-site, national pathology provider. P&C Labs’ network of more than 40 hospitals and numerous clinics throughout Kentucky and surrounding regions specializes in anatomic pathology, cytopathology, hematopathology, dermatopathology, and gastrointestinal pathology services. Their oral pathology services reach nationwide. Over the years, the lab has expanded its outreach, embraced advanced technologies, and built a reputation for operational excellence and adaptability.
The challenge

Before Clinisys, P&C Labs struggled with their legacy LIS. Manual workarounds for critical processes and slow support led to inefficiencies and frustration. As the lab doubled in size twice over five years, the need for a modern, integrated system became clear.
“It’s an entire business mindset change,” said Steve Olsen, COO of P&C Labs. “We had to change that mindset. ‘Intent is Prior to Content’ so to change what we delivered, we had to change the thinking that delivered it.”

Why Clinisys?

P&C Labs Chief Operating Officer Steve Olsen and lab technician Marilyn Harp work with Clinisys™ Orchard Enterprise Pathology® Field Implementation Analyst Tammy Barnhart during system implementation to solidify workflow configurations.
Olsen and his team chose Clinisys™ Orchard® Enterprise Pathology for its flexibility and granular control.
“The granularity that Clinisys gives us allows us to do high-quality work with all sorts of checks and balances for hospital customers, as well as reach out nationally to grow national business — providing solutions for pathologists and pathology customers in an ever challenging industry,” Olsen said.
Clinisys™ Orchard® Enterprise Pathology supports remote work, digital workflows, and automation — all of which will enable P&C Labs’ next phase of rapid growth, quality outcomes, improved turnaround times — providing solutions for suffering hospitals and pathology groups.

Implementation and change management

Johnston and Kirk work together to ensure all peripheral devices are communicating with the system appropriately.
Transitioning to Clinisys™ Orchard® Enterprise Pathology was a strategic initiative.
“Change equals pain, plus a vision of where to go, and the first practical steps of how to get there,” Olsen said, referencing his change management philosophy.
Despite initial resistance, even veteran pathologists quickly embraced digital tools.
“Within two days, I had 20 pathologists using a single device we configured to manipulate digital images AND interact with the LIS—which has assisted in helping reduce non-productive time moving from mouse to keyboard, etc.—amazing,” Olsen said.
The team invested in upfront training and process redesign, leveraging champions within the organization to drive adoption.
Results and impact
Turnaround time
“After just three weeks with the total digital integration we have 57% of cases being done in a single day. That’s really incredible,” Olsen said, highlighting the dramatic improvement in turnaround time.
Remote pathologists saw single-day turnaround jump from 26% to 72%.¹
Capacity
“Our turnaround increased by 23% across the board—88% improvement,” Olsen said. “And a big reduction in day-two turnaround because most of it moved to day one.”¹
Remote work
“Pathologists no longer have to be here to be an employee here […] they can live wherever they want. That’s extraordinary,” Olsen said.
Quality
“Quality ran a report, and internal consultations are up 25%,” Olsen said. “That is because of the digital images and integration.”¹
Innovation
“Now we have the footprint to add things like the Ibex prostate AI system and many other AI tools,” Olsen said. “You’ll never get to that unless you’re on a digital system.”
P&C Labs continues to innovate, training the next generation of histotechs and cytotechs and exploring new technologies like RFID specimen tracking. P&C Labs is working with state and local entities to provide quality pathology to hospitals and clinics in the state and surrounding areas. Their oral pathology services are well-positioned to address a growing national demand for specialized diagnostic support.
Looking ahead
“Clinisys Orchard LIS has been a game changer. The flexibility, automation, and digital integration have transformed our workflows, improved turnaround times, and allowed our team to work remotely without sacrificing quality. We’re now able to serve more clients, respond faster, and innovate for the future of pathology.”
