A new state-of-the-art laboratory system for the Black Country Pathology Service

A new state-of-the-art laboratory system for the Black Country Pathology Service (BCPS) has been announced today.

The new Laboratory Information Management System (WinPath Enterprise) will reduce clinical risk and provide more complete patient history across primary and secondary care.

The new system will enable pathology services across the multiple hospital sites to work together more collaboratively than before.

This will result in an enhanced service for clinicians and offers patients a centre of excellence providing all aspects of a quality pathology service.

CliniSys is delighted to have been selected by BCPS as their chosen IT solutions partner, having progressed through a rigorous and diligent procurement process run via the Clinical IT Framework.

CliniSys will be providing BCPS with a hosted IT solution, centred around its market leading WinPath Enterprise network optimised LIMS and with integrated “end to end” capability through the latest CliniSys ICE Enterprise order communications and result reporting solution.

The BCPA is progressing rapidly to develop a regional pathology network that will contribute 5 million annual savings to the £200 million national savings target.

The network will operate a ‘hub and spoke’ service model with the “hub” located in showcase facilities at New Cross Hospital in Wolverhampton and essential service laboratories (ESLs) supporting acute services in the other partner sites at Dudley, Walsall and SWBH trusts.

BCPS will provide a world class pathology service to support clinical and patients’ needs across the region.

The importance of a modern, flexible, agile and future proofed IT solution to enable planned and future service transformation was recognised in the initial outline business case and is acknowledged as a key contributor to the network’s success.

WinPath Enterprise is able to support such a high throughput pathology service like BCPS in a number of key areas.

WinPath Enterprise offers higher system availability, and improved patient care through better turnaround times, standard reference ranges and optimised workflows, in line with the Carter Report.

Graham Danks, BCPS Operations Manager, said: “We are well positioned and organised to support the objectives and targets proposed by NHSI.

“Having laid solid foundations, we are progressing well with standardisation and harmonisation across the network.

“We are embracing the appropriate adoption of new technology and automation and driving forward with our plans to become a paper-light service.”

“Our partnership with CliniSys will be a vital contributor in us  progressing our transformational plans, take advantage of future change and innovation and enable continued growth and expansion.”

Donald Saum, Business Development Director for CliniSys, said: “We are delighted to be working with Graham and BCPS team and welcome the drive, enthusiasm and commitment  in developing a true collaborative partnership which will showcase ‘end to end’ pathology IT solutions and continue to drive innovation and expand boundaries.

“We look forward to a successful project and supporting BCPS with service growth and enhancement to deliver real benefits to their users and patients.”
