What if changing software could transform your laboratory?
The CHU of Besançon, France, entrusted Clinisys with the modernization of its anatomical pathology laboratory, a key service that handles more than 30,000 exams annually (histology, cytology, molecular biology). Thanks to our software solution « DaVinci », we supported the complete digitization of processes, from sample reception to result delivery. This project enhances traceability, ISO 15189 compliance, and diagnostic efficiency for the benefit of patients and healthcare professionals.

The challenge
Before the implementation of DaVinci, the anatomical pathology laboratory at CHU Besançon faced three major challenges:
- A user interface that was not intuitive for the teams;
- Partial traceability, which created vulnerabilities;
- Integration difficulties with third-party tools, particularly in molecular biology and imaging (macroscopy, digital pathology).
The Clinisys approach
As part of the modernization of the anatomical pathology laboratory at CHU Besançon, our Clinisys teams deployed our “DaVinci” solution, a software 100% dedicated to anatomical pathology. This included interfacing with instruments (IHC, FISH, scanners), migrating data from the previous system, training users, and integrating with the hospital information system (HL7, DMP (Shared Medical File), LDAP).
Our expertise in interoperability and hospital project management enabled us to support the lab in fully digitizing their processes, offering them greater autonomy in daily operations. A technological advancement serving performance and quality of care.
The solution
“The real change is that we can query the database easily, cross-reference data, and use it without going back through IT.”
Franck Monnien, Research engineer, CHU Besançon
A strategic choice driven by the specialty
The choice of DaVinci quickly became evident, particularly thanks to a convincing demonstration. The modern and fluid interface, along with features designed specifically for our specialty, reflected software built by and for anatomical pathology.
Despite the lack of deployment in France at the time, several factors tipped the scales:
- GDPR compliance and strict traceability standards;
- Strong integration capabilities with current and future equipments;
- The commitment of the project team at the time.
The outcomes
“Changing LIS is always a challenge… but with a well-designed tool like DaVinci, it becomes a real opportunity for transformation. It’s a strategic investment, both for the organization and for the enhancement of biological resources and data.”
Franck Monnien, Research engineer, CHU Besançon
Results after 8 years
With over 7 years of hindsight, the results are very positive:
- Sample identification and tracking have significantly improved;
- Traceability is complete and meets all requirements;
- Smooth integration of new equipment (automation, imaging);
- Simplified access to data for advanced research (tumor registry, biobank, activity monitoring, etc.).
A particularly appreciated feature: the ability to create custom queries without needing support, allowing the team to adapt their worklists in real time.
Switching to DaVinci was a turning point for CHU Besançon
“Switching to DaVinci marked a turning point in our organization. We gained fluidity and traceability. Looking ahead, we want to go further with:
- the production of dynamic dashboards,
- interfacing with imaging tools,
- and the intelligent use of our data through advanced text search engines.”
